A Special Event in the Walled Garden at Nanteos

On the 18th of October 2024, a special event was held in the Nanteos walled garden. A Fig Tree was planted in memory of Amos Lander Hopkins. He worked at Nanteos for 17 years as a Head Gardener from 1895 until 1912. His Gt. Granddaughters came to Nanteos.
Amos Landers Hopkins was born in1864 was one of the last head gardeners at Nanteos. He was born in Leicestershire, and married Agnes Hunt in July 1889. They came to Nanteos in 1895 and had seven children, three of them being born at Nanteos Lodge where they lived. Amos worked at Nanteos for seventeen years and was well respected in the community. In 1912 he left Nanteos and moved to Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, and ultimately became the Llanelli Horticultural Society Chairman. He died in 1937, aged 74.
Amos played an important part in the local community, as they newspaper article below states -
LLANARTH. The Annual Show. The Sixth Annual Show of Garden and Farm Produce was held at the Llanarth Board School on Thursday. The show proved a success in every sense, the number of exhibits and attendance being in excess of any former year. The judges were Mr Hopkins, Nanteos, and Mrs Jones, Gellifaharen, Llandyssul.
